CANON INFORMATION
CHARACTER NAME: Zagreus, son of Hades
CANON: Hades (The game by Supergiant Games)
HISTORY: Hades Wiki and Zagreus' page on it
STRENGTHS: Charismatic - When he wants to, Zagreus has little difficulty getting along with people. Even people he kills on a regular basis will usually at least put up with him (death is kind of meaingless in the realm of Hades, after all.). He usually makes a point to search for diplomatic solutions, he cracks jokes, and generally is pretty likable.
Determined - Zagreus is literally and figuratively going through hell for his quest. He regularly gets maimed, crushed, stabbed, shot, burned, and generally mangled to the point of death, only to wake up back where he started. But no matter how many times he falls, he shakes it off with a shrug and tries again. He's not the type to be deterred by failure, and can bounce back from just about anything.
Optimistic - Zagreus sees the best in himself and others who aren't Lord Hades. He doesn't let bad moods last for long, and even when things are going poorly he usually searches for a light side of any situation, or just bounces back once a bad situation has passed. He's easy going and adaptable to just about any situation, no matter how strange.
FLAWS: Stubborn - The dark side of determined. Once Zagreus latches onto an idea he refuses to give it up, or even consider that he might be wrong. He'll just keep on ramming his face a problem until it's solved. It's difficult to convince him to give up on something even if doing so is actually a good idea.
Selfish - Zagreus is friends with a lot of people in the Underworld, but when he decided to escape, those friendships suddenly didn't seem to mean anything. The first boss is his former tutor and possibly also his ex-girlfriend but that doesn't stop them from brutally murdering each other over and over again, even when it's clear that Zagreus has grown strong enough that she can't stop him anymore.
Runs his mouth - Zagreus won't hold his tongue even when he is CLEARLY outmatched. He'll tell people vastly more powerful than him exactly what he thinks of them. He isn't intimidated by authority or by power, even if it ends in his messy demise. What are they gonna do, kill him? Like he's never been through THAT before.
CANON ABILITIES: As a demigod, Zagreus EXACT powers are kind of unclear. He's resistant (but not immune) to heat and fire, he's far stronger, tougher, and faster than a normal human, and he sometimes leaves flaming footprints while running. Most of his actual abilities in the game are either boons granted to him by the gods of Olympus, or powers associated to the ancient weapons littered about the house of Hades that he "borrows" to fight his way to the surface.
Most noteable is his immortality, of a kind. He can die, and does die an awful lot, but when he dies he goes to the underworld, which is where he already is. Death robs him of none of his vitality, it just forces him to start over.
AU INFORMATION
AU CHARACTER NAME: Zagreus, son of Hades
AGE: Unclear. Time is hard to track in Tartarus, where there is no day or night or seasons, and gods age weird. He looks to be in his late teens or early twenties but is definitely much older.
GRADE: Undergrad
AU BACKSTORY: The Greek Gods exist. They're not the lords of creation, as they were in the old myths, but they are very powerful entities that live on a massive mountain in the Outlands where they live in an eternal paradise and have lots of parties. All but one of them, that is.
Hades, god of the underworld, does not live on Mt. Olympus. He lives in the depths of the Underworld, where he rules over the dead souls that reside there. He hated his job, but a stubborn and responsible streak made him do his best at it none the less. He was a dour and grumpy man until he met Persephone. She was from the mortal realm, but they fell in love, for a time. They even had a son.
Eventually however, for her own reasons, Persephone left. She returned to the human world and went into hiding where even Hades could not find her. Hades depression returned, worse than ever, especially now that he had a son around to remind him of his past. Zagreus grew up in the House of Hades thinking he was the son of Hades and Nyx (goddess of night) and hated it. His father was critical and dissmissive of all his accomplishments when he wasn't outright cruel and abusive. So when Zagreus found out the truth about his lineage, he decided that he would leave Hades to find his mother in the human world.
It wasn't easy. It took him months of trying, during which he died dozens of times only to wake up again in the House of Hades, where all [citation needed] dead souls end up. Eventually, however, Zagreus made it and emerged onto the surface of modern day Earth. He was quickly picked up by the police after it was clear that he had no idea how human society functioned and also superhuman strength. Eventually word got back to Daybreak, which sent some people to pick him up before he got killed again and woke up back where he started. He agreed to stay there and help out as needed if they helped him search for his mother, but she is hidden VERY well.
AU PERSONALITY DEVIATION: - Zagreus has successfully escaped the Underworld in this AU, and thus feels pretty good about himself, even if the shades of his father occasionally show up to try and drag him back. +10 smug points.
- Zagreus is in a place he has no experience with. The underworld is where he grew up, so things like weather, mortals who are actually alive, or modern technology are utterly unfamiliar to him. He'll be confused and asking a LOT of questions.
RACE: Demigod
SECRET SOCIETY: Nah
POWERS: As a demigod of the underworld, Zagreus is far stronger and tougher than an ordinary human, though not unstoppable and not invulnerable. His power is derived from darkness. In the game this is interpretted as magical darkness crystals that you collect to spend on increasing your stats, but here I'm going to be a bit more literal about it and have his strength grow greater at night or in the shade, but weaker in the day or under bright lights. He's also fire resistant.
Additionally, Zagreus has stolen the shades of some ancient legendary weapons from the depths of the Underworld, and can call shadow-y replicas of them into being. Specifically, a sword, a shield, a bow, a spear, and a gun (The gods invented guns millenia ago, but have kept the knowledge from humanity, deeming it too dangerous. They were QUITE put out to hear we had invented them on our own.)
Zagreus cannot die. Or he can, but unless some sort of special measures are taken (binding his soul to a cursed gem or deovuring it or something along those lines), it won't stick. His body will vanish into a pool of blood, and he'll awaken back in the underworld, none the worse for wear. Then, of course, he'll have to fight his way back out while his father will be EXTRA careful to make sure he doesn't slip out again. It would probably be a week or two before he made his way back to the land of the living.
The cost for this rather impressive power is that Hades knows where he is, and will periodically send strike teams of deadly shades to try and kill him. Because NO ONE is supposed to escape from the underworld. In fact, any undead will get a vague sense that Zagreus isn't supposed to be here even if they've never met Hades in their life. What they do with this feeling is of course up to their personal inclination. The wards around Daybreak Academy will probably make such attacks rare, but the minute he steps foot outside them anything could happen.
Zagreus is also friends with Cerberus. This isn't really a power, per se, but it's worth noting. Cerberus is a very good boy. Or perhaps three very good boys.
